Are Dachshunds A Smart Breed?

If you have ever had a dachshund as your pet, I am pretty sure you already know what having a lifelong friend who loves you dearly feels like. We dachshunds are adorable pets and we love our humans fiercely. I love waking up next to my owner snuggled deep within the covers in the morning. She takes me out where I do my business and we roam the streets. After that, she takes me out in the garden where she throws a piece of wood, and I get it back to her. When she is gone away for many hours from home, I miss her so much that when she returns home in the evening, I wag my tail at her while she pets my head lovingly. We often cuddle up in the night and watch the square box together, the black-colored box that is operated through a remote! Did I mention that I love my guardian?

Are Dachshunds A Smart Breed

Now, like always, I know humans have got questions that you would like answered. Because I want you to know all about us dachshunds, and I want you to love your dachshund just like my owner loves me, I will help you with those answers.

Are Dachshunds Hard To Train?

Dachshunds were bred to think on our own and as a result of this, we may be a little stubborn about following orders at the start. We dachshunds are also considered daring to the point of rashness, which basically means that we are not afraid to hold our ground if we believe we are right. This makes training us a little difficult.

Also, I will warn you: if you are training your dachshund, and he isn’t listening to you, then reprimanding him will do you no good because he believes he is right; he will probably hold his ground to the point of growling or snapping at you. This is so because the badgers our ancestors used to hunt were usually adamant and would not back off. So holding our ground is instinctual for us.

So how can you train someone who is so stubborn and not ready to follow your orders? Don’t worry, nobody can help you with this answer better than a fellow dachshund. As I have said, reprimanding your dachshund won’t do any good and may even make your dog more stubborn. So, training him is only made possible with consistency and positive reinforcement.

When my owner was trying to train me early on, she would use food as reinforcement. When I would do something she wanted me to continue doing, she would give me a delicious treat, and if I did something she did not appreciate, she would simply ignore me. This helped me to understand what behavior I was expected to repeat and what I should stop doing.

Are Dachshund Puppies Easy To Train?

We Dachshunds are a highly energetic and spirited breed. We love to exercise, get excited about games, and do not mind covering a few miles. We are a playful breed, which is most probably why humans consider us their best friends. If you are thinking of getting a dachshund as a pet, you might want to get yourself a dachshund puppy as opposed to an adult dog because it is easier to train a dachshund puppy. While dachshunds are young, their minds are receptive and they are more eager to learn. Since puppies at an earlier age do not already have a set mind and lifestyle, they will more easily grasp whatever you teach them.

Are Dachshunds Hard To House Train?

To be honest, yes. Going outside the house to do our business is not something we are a big fan of. So yup, it is going to be hard for you to potty train us. Also, we dachshunds have a small bladder, which is clear from our small bodies, and this just adds to the problem.

That said, it is not impossible to potty train us. If you have adopted my dachshund cousin at an early age, then it will be relatively easy for you because he has not already developed the habit of pooping wherever he is.

Now, in order to potty train us, you will need a leash, a crate and lots of treats. The leash will help you when you need to take us outside, and sometimes even drag us out of the house, to poop; the crate will be helpful if you are not present there to supervise us, and the treats are needed for positive reinforcement. Other than these, you will need lots of patience and time to invest in us. Won’t you do it for dogs as cute as we are?

How Long Does It Take To House Train a Dachshund?

Potty training a dachshund is a tough job. It takes a lot of patience and time on part of our owners. How long it will take to train your dog can’t be said for sure; it depends on their individual learning capacity. It will take you somewhere between one and two weeks. In order to get your dachshund pooping outside of the house, you will have to take them outside every day at a consistent time. You will have to do that for adult dogs every 1 to 2 hours and for puppies every 30 or so minutes. Also, when you take your dog outside to do his business, use the phrase ‘Go Potty’, so he will learn to associate this phrase with potty training.

How To Train A Dachshund To Not Bark?

We dachshunds are a vocal breed and we love to bark. I know it can get annoying so I will tell you how to stop it. When I was young, I would try to draw the attention of my owner by barking really loud. But she would not listen. She would wait for me to stop barking and then command “Quiet.” If I stopped barking after that, she would give me a little treat. And so I learned that staying silent was appreciated.

Can You Train Dachshund To Hunt?

Training a dachshund to hunt is not that difficult since we are a hunting breed. All you would need to do in order to train us would require 15-20 minutes of your day. Get some decoy toys and scent sprays for your dog. Make your dachshund smells the prey and then hide it. Tell your dog to follow the smell. And if he does, offer him a treat. Simple!

Conclusion

You know, my guardian often says that she loves me the most because I am the smartest of them all. Well, that is true! Dachshunds are badger hunters who were trained to think for themselves as they often had to go down the burrows alone without a human telling them what to do next, a situation that requires a high level of intelligence. But that intelligence also sometimes gets us into trouble!
