How To Identify A Pure Breed Dachshund?

Dachshund puppies are very cute. Naturally, a lot of people want to bring me home. However, people should be aware that there is much more to picking out a dachshund puppy than merely choosing the cutest one. Cuteness is not a measure of the health of the puppy or its worth when it is evaluated against breed standards. Even if cuteness is a factor when selecting a puppy, you need to be aware of other things that you should look for if you want a purebred dachshund puppy.

Dachshunds are characterized by our unique, elongated appearance. Our narrow and compact bodies are low to the ground, which has resulted in several nicknames, such as ‘wiener dog’ or ‘sausage dog’. When looking at the body of a dachshund puppy, you should look past this distinctive characteristic and focus instead on other aspects of the dog like his skin. For example, his skin should be flexible and not excessively wrinkled.

No part of his body should sag. There should be no loose skin between the shoulders. His shoulders should be long and broad. They should also connect his long, muscular neck to his long, muscular trunk. His track should be quite straightforward; his loins well arched, and he should have a strong pelvis and back end.

A dachshund should have a relatively straight tail with a slight curve. It should perfectly follow the line of his spine. There should be no twists, kinks or knots in it. The purebred dachshund’s tail, whether high or low, should provide a balanced appearance to the dog.

Apart from his body, you may also want to ensure that his legs are short and relatively straight. Neither his front nor his back legs should turn in or out. Since the back legs have the most power, they should be positioned well apart.

Dachshund puppies have full and broad feet that should stand close together. Generally, my feet are straight, but in some cases, they may turn out slightly. My hind feet are smaller in size and narrower than my front feet. When selecting a puppy, check that the pads under my paws are firm and thick. Generally, a puppy’s nails should be black, but in some cases, they can be a lighter color, depending on the color of the puppy’s coat.

You also need to observe a dachshund puppy when he walks. Check if he is favoring any paws or if he walks equally on all fours, which is what they should do. A dachshund should not exhibit any awkward movements because they are known for their confident gait. We walk proudly and carry our heads high. If you find that puppies in the litter are displaying any of these characteristics, it is nothing to be concerned about. Puppies are like children; they may make certain awkward movements as they are growing and learning. In order to get a good idea of how a puppy will look when he becomes older, look at his parents.

Next, turn your attention to the puppy’s head. His head should nicely complement his body and evenly taper to the tip of his black nose. The nose should be large and the nostrils should be wide.

The eyes of a dachshund puppy are dark, medium-sized and almond-shaped. They should be complemented by dark rims. His eyes should convey a lively, intelligent, and pleasant expression. Next, you will find that his ears should be of modest length. They should go hand-in-hand with our perfect scissor bite. These features make us perfect badger hunters.

Dachshund puppies can be available in three different types of coats.

The Smooth-Haired (Shorthaired)

This coat type is short, dense and very smooth to the touch. However, the hair underneath can be quite coarse.

Long-Haired

Dachshund puppies that have long hair also have a soft coat. The coat is either straight or slightly wavy and it lies close to the body. Furthermore, a long-haired coat is longest under the neck, behind the legs of the puppy and on other parts of the body. The outside of a dachshund’s ears are well feathered.

Wirehaired

On these coats, the hair is straight, short and coarse. The undercoat is also dense. However, the hair covering their chin, jaw, ears and eyebrows is not wiry. There is a noticeable beard present on the chin of wirehaired dogs. His eyebrows should be bushy. The hair on his ears is not smooth and a harsh coat covers his legs and feet.

Conclusion

Dachshund puppies can be found in different coat colors. Any of the hound colors are possible in a dachshund, including spots. However, white is not a common color or a preferred one. Sometimes, a dachshund will have a small white patch on his chest. In general, dachshunds have black noses and nails. However, brown noses and nails can be seen in puppies that have chocolate/spotted or chocolate/tan coats.
