Are Dachshunds Emotional

Are Dachshunds Emotional? How Do They Show Affection To Their Parents?

Dogs and humans share a beautiful bond. We can be devoted to our parents even after they die and vice versa. Our parents love to cuddle and kiss as a gesture of love. We protect them and wait for them to get home with loyalty and hopeful eyes. Our loving nature is probably why we were the 8th most popular dog breed in 2009 and why many families often choose to adopt us.

Dachshunds As Family Dogs

Our loyalty, devotion, and free-spirited nature make us great family dogs. When a dog becomes a part of the family, he feels immensely protective of them.

Dachshunds Often Form A Special Bond with One Person

For most of us, it is common to get particularly attached to one person in the family, usually the person who plays with us, feeds us and gives us the most attention. As a result, we’ll develop a special bond with that person. However, sometimes we just feel especially connected to some people. We might get excited as soon as they come home or when they play with us. We can even behave like the president of their fan club by keeping our ears flattened and tail wiggling around them.

Dachshunds and Licking

We absolutely LOVE licking our owners.

We experience intense separation anxiety and when our owners come back home after a few hours of leaving us alone, we might start licking them all over to express our happiness.

Communication

We could also be trying to communicate with our owners by licking them. It could mean, ‘let’s be friends,’ ‘please play with me,’ or ‘I love you.’

Affection

When we lick our owners out of excitement, they get happy. If we believe that you like being licked by us, then we are likely to lick you more to please you and to you show our affection.

Submission

Licking our parents is one way of telling them that they are our leaders. When a free-spirited and independent dog like a dachshund submits, it is a grand gesture of love. Licking can also be a way of showing respect.

However, you must not let a dog lick you around the eyes, nose, and mouth as these areas are susceptible to infection by bacteria present in your dog’s saliva.

Sitting on You

Sitting on you, laying our head on you or standing on you can be a means of getting your attention or getting closer to you. However, can it also mean that we’re being disrespectful?

A dog will sit on you for three reasons.

–  We love you so much that we want to be close to you. We are so excited to be around you that we end up sitting on you. Or more importantly, we associate it as behavior that you like and appreciate. We might also come to sit on your lap to cheer you up when you’re feeling sad or sick.

–  We might be trying to clarify that we’re the leaders in the relationship. We are independent by nature and like feeling like the rulers of the world. Sitting on you can be a sign that we’re trying to establish dominance.

–  We also sit on our parents to get our scent on them. It is similar to marking our territory, but it also comes from our desire to protect.

Hugging Your Dachshund

Who doesn’t love being close to our companions to bask in their warmth? We like to sleep on our parent’s beds with them. We might even press our back against your side so we can feel your presence throughout the night. If you have another pet dog in the house, we might also sleep huddled with them.

Kissing Your Dachshund

Kissing your dachshund is your way of showing them affection. Just like you don’t truly understand the meaning behind our licks, we are clueless about what a kiss is. And just like you understand that licking you is a positive action, we understand that kisses are a show of affection. We can read body language and can feel your warmth when you kiss us. In addition, after being kissed, along with other displays of affection like cuddling and petting, we start associating it with the right behavior. When we are kissed, we feel praised and loved.

It is important to remember that dogs react differently. Some of us can feel threatened when you kiss and hug us. It is essential to pay attention to how we react to your displays of affection. If we get annoyed, then you need to find another way to show us love.

Dachshund’s and Children

While your kids may love your dachshund and vice versa, both need to be monitored when they play together. Kids do not understand that they might be annoying us when they play with our paws, our ears and our face. If we are annoyed in any way, we may snap. We also have a very sensitive back and can get hurt easily if a kid falls on our back while playing with us.

Are Dachshunds Protective?

The presence of a dachshund in your home can ease your anxiety. We are very loyal and courageous and will do anything to protect our parents. With us at home, you don’t have to fear intruders because our “big dog” bark can scare any stranger away.

Male Dachshund v/s Female Dachshunds: Which One is More Protective?

While it is possible to learn about a dog’s temperament based on its breed, size and pattern, gender is not that influential. Our behavior will depend on how you train us.

Dachshunds And Emotions

Our minds are roughly similar to that of a toddler. Even though we don’t experience emotions the same way an adult human can, we do feel emotions.

Some dogs mourn the death of their parents, or feel sad when missing out on an interaction with a person or a dog that we regularly see. We feel happy when we get a lot of attention and we love playing with our parents. When left alone too long, we can feel secluded. Inside our crate or at home, we can feel comforted. These are all emotions that we feel and can communicate through our behavior.

Do Dogs Cry?

Yes, we do. When we’re young and recently adopted, we may cry because we’re among new surroundings. When we’re left alone or crated without being trained, we cry out of stress and anxiety. We even mourn the loss of a loved one with howling and crying.

It is crucial to remember that when we are young, incessant crying can even lead to death, which is why you need to comfort us and soothe us into a more stable state.

Can a Dachshund Fall in Love?

We might not present our lady love with flowers and chocolates, but yes, we can fall in love, just like humans. If you’re a hopeless romantic, you might think that we’re hopelessly in love with a dog of the other sex when we love to be around them. If you’re not such a romantic, you can look at our love and call it a friendly bond. However, scientists suggest that just like in humans, when a dachshund is in love, his brain produces oxytocin, or what is known as the love hormone. Our love might not be the romantic kind, popularized by movies and novels, but it’s legitimate and precious. We express our love for other dogs with cuddles and licks.

Conclusion

Guess what? Scientists claim that dachshund parents often love their pets more than they love the people in their lives. The bond between a dachshund and his parent is stronger than the bond other pet owners share with other dog breeds. Adopting a dachshund is a win-win situation for all!
