Dachshund – Curbing Aggressive Behavior

When I talk about dachshund aggression, the first thing that might come to your mind is biting. However, aggression can include of a lot of different behaviors. For example, sometimes your dachshund may show aggression by growling.

Dachshunds are considered one of the most stubborn breeds of dog. Dachshund means ‘badger dog’; as hunting dogs, we are naturally predisposed to aggression. Our small size makes us adorable, but that doesn’t mean we cannot be aggressive. Our big ego and inherent aggression as a hunting dog make us the top position holders on the list.

Aggression can be detected at an early stage. When we are six weeks old or more, our aggressive traits are noticeable. Aggression can be seen in most dogs, but it usually depends on the quality of their training or how they were treated. As a dachshund owner, you need to learn how to behave and how to treat your dog. For instance, punishing or shouting at us when we are young, even when we are unaware of our mistakes, we are more likely to be aggressive as a grown dog.

Dealing With Different Types Of Aggression

Dominant Aggression

This kind of aggression occurs when your dog hasn’t been adequately trained. Dachshunds challenge their owners to check their authority. Dachshunds also like to dominate others as they are hunting dogs. In order to control this type of aggression, you must show dominance over your dog from an early age and behave like you are the leader of the pack. You can do this by having your food before your dog eats his.

When you go out, make sure your dachshund follows you and you always need to be a strong leader or teacher to train them well.

Early training is one solution to avoiding this kind of aggression. Start training your puppy from the day you bring him home. Dachshunds are quick learners and they need to be shown what behavior is acceptable.

Illness Aggression

Most dogs show aggressive behavior when they are in pain or experiencing some health issues. In this way, dachshunds are not different from any other dog. As an owner, you need to routinely check on your dachshund to promote fitness and address any health-related problems.

Also be on the lookout for any internal injuries. Many dachshunds suffer from back pain or suffer from interconvertible disc disease. To avoid this, always make sure that we don’t jump from a bed or couch or anywhere as we have an elongated body with a delicate back. When we jump, it impacts our back, and we are more likely to have back problems, which can further lead to aggressive behavior.

Territorial Aggression

This kind of aggression comes out when someone enters your dog’s territory. Your dog will take charge to teach the other dog who the leader is. This kind of aggression is common around unfamiliar dogs. You need to socialize us from an early age by taking us out often. You should teach us to be calm when a stranger comes around. Make us socialize with strangers so we can learn to trust and not behave aggressively with them.

Stop Your Puppy From Barking

Most of the time, dogs bark to get attention from their owners. However, this should be stopped as soon as possible; you can also curb barking in your dog by giving him something safe to play with. You should avoid punishing your puppy physically as it can increase aggressiveness.

Possessive Aggression

Your dog will demonstrate this type of aggression when you try to take away his food or toy. We will start to growl; in this instance, we are not actually being aggressive. We are just trying to assert our possessiveness. You should train us to not be aggressive when you need to take our stuff away. We can be jealous, stubborn and disobedient and teaching us can be a challenging task, but we are worth it.

Reward-based Training

Whenever we do something the way you wanted, reward us so we can understand what is appropriate and what is not. You should never reward your dachshund if he shows aggressive behavior, as this can encourage the behavior.

Make a proper schedule for us for meals, play, poops and a walk. This schedule can help us become more disciplined, which will then help regulate our behavior. As a hound, we are prone to small-dog syndrome, which comes with some negative traits. Because of our stubbornness, we require a lot of care, patience, and strong leadership.

Understand The Reason Behind Aggression

The last thing you want is your dog to bite someone out of nowhere. To prevent this and other aggressive behavior, it is important to understand why your dog is being aggressive in the first place. Often the reason is because the dog was not socialized enough at a young age, so when he is suddenly exposed to a different environment or different people, he may not act as you would like him to.

Start by asking yourself why your dog is behaving aggressively. Fearful aggression is not similar to other types of aggression. With this particular type, your dachshund won’t show any warning sign, as he would with other kinds of aggression. Usually, fearful aggression happens when we are very scared and don’t know how to react under the circumstances. If we feel unsafe and out of options, we may bite or attack and fear is the reason.

Induced Pain Aggression

This kind of aggression occurs when we are in pain. Dachshunds are generally good at hiding pain, but in the event of unbearable pain, we are more likely to show aggression. We can even bite our owners while they are trying to help us. This is one of the more rare instances, but you need to be alert while handling your dachshund when he is in pain or suffering from an illness.

Conclusion

There is no easy solution to handling aggression in your dachshund. You must always keep an eye on us. Try taking your dog to the veterinarian as soon as possible to diagnose the cause of your dog’s aggressive behavior. Most dogs show signs of aggression and if you can detect it early, then you can more easily address the problem.
