As dachshunds, we have a miniature-sized body and that makes us cuter. However, this limits the kind of fashionable clothing we can wear. We have a longer body and shorter legs, so it gets tough for us to find clothes. We wish to stay trendy and comfortable at the same time, but for this to happen, our owners need to take care of a few things. They must find our proper size that fits well; clothes should not be too heavy and should give us some structural support. There is a wide range of clothing specifically meant for our breed. Some owners aren’t aware so they end up buying anything and that might not be good. Furthermore, we are not comfortable in the same type of fabric throughout the year. Take it from a cute dachshund puppy: you seriously need to search quite a bit before getting the perfect clothes. Luckily, the following tips will be of great use to you.
Pay Attention To Clothing Size
Due to our unique body shape, most outfits do not fit us well. The sizes can also vary according to geographical location or based on whether your dachshund is miniature or standard-sized. “Tweenie” dachshunds are somewhat in between sizes.
Clothes that might look good on some other breed might not suit us. Clothing should not be too tight or too loose. Tight clothing is too suffocating and constraining while loose clothing feels like bags hanging off of us. Loose clothing might also cause us to trip and fall. Midriff outfits are easy to find, but since we have a longer body, we like the more extended back coverage riffs. Take your dachshund along whenever you go shopping for us, so you can try clothes on your dog to see what works and what doesn’t.
Quality
We love to play, eat and jump all day, so the quality of the clothes should follow suit. Look for larger armholes because smaller ones make us uncomfortable and they hurt, too. These holes restrict our free movement, and this can irk us, causing us to bark in protest. Our clothing should also be durable and not hinder us when we play. Quality clothing is something you should invest in for the goodwill of your beloved dog.
Any clothing I wear must have good body coverage; this is one of the most essential things that I look for whenever I go shopping with my owner. I have a broad chest and a rounded body, so any outfit should cover most of my extended body. Furthermore, the fabric should be compatible with my skin so it doesn’t cause allergies, rashes, etc. We grow with time, so remember that no outfit will last forever. The clothes that fit me when I was 2 to 6 months old will be old and ill-fitting when I am 1-2 years of age.
Clothes With Back Support
Dachshunds are prone to back injuries, so clothes should be good enough to provide some support. Our long body size is the reason that you have to be extra cautious about our back. Do not put clothes on me just for the fun of it; any clothing should have a practical function as well. I also have smaller legs that have to bear the weight of my entire body, so do not put more pressure on them by dressing me in heavy clothing.
Clothing that supports me from beneath the chest is considered a great aid. Such garments offer the same support as you do by keeping a hand under my belly when you pick me up. Such a garment could also help me avoid the chance of developing IVDD (Intervertebral Disk Disease).
Dress For The Weather
Although I have a good amount of fur on my body, extra clothing in winter would be great. I am not very fond of cold weather, and in particular, neither are my soft-haired cousins. Younger dachshunds with very little hair need to be protected even more.
Please get me a warm jacket that will help me maintain my body temperature. An undesirable body temperature can even result in severe illness at times. However, don’t forget about summer time or rainy days. You can buy me some lightweight, trendy scarves and T-shirts. However, pay attention to the fabric because this can either make or break my day.
A trendy raincoat with some fun designs on it would be perfect for me in the rainy season. I like to wear a raincoat that has some reflector designs and stripes so that I can be easily seen from a distance, even on a dark, rainy night.
Fashion Choices
There are a multitude of designs available if you stop by the right store. Several articles of clothing have accessories on them, such as lacing or prominent buttons. I love to chew so don’t buy me outfits with a lot of chewable accessories. I don’t want to end up swallowing anything harmful.
Colors that pop often look good on dogs of my size. Besides T-shirts, vests also look good on me and they are my preferred choice in summer. Go for colors that are a total contrast to my fur.
Solid-colored jackets with dog prints are also trendy in our fashion world. Hand-knit sweaters also suit me well because they do not mess with my fur too much and they help me stay warm. Among the many designs, turtleneck sweaters look good on me, too. Hoodies are also creating quite a buzz in the dachshund fashion world.
Conclusion
Finding the right fit for me can take some time, but do not settle for anything less than what I deserve. Oversized or undersized garments are a big no-no for us. Oversized clothing is too baggy, and smaller outfits make us uncomfortable and restrict our motion. Furthermore, you should only go for fabric that is body-friendly. No dog wants a fabric-related allergy. Some structural support built into the design of our clothes would also be much appreciated. In addition, I need different clothes for different seasons. The same clothes would not do in summer and winter, and for the rainy season, a raincoat is a must. Avoid buying me clothes that have chewable accessories on them. Instead, you can get clothes with different stripes, print, or even solid colors.
