Hello, I hope you know me by now. I am Floppy the Dachshund. I love to communicate with you to help you be a better owner and make your pet a better pet. Today, I want to tell you how you can easily achieve that and to make having a dachshund a fun experience for you.
It is very important that you engage us. We are a very active breed and love to have you with us doing almost anything. I will point out a few special activities that will help you better bond with us and have a great time!
Housetraining Your Dachshund and Other Concerns
Dachshunds were bred for tracking animals living in burrows, which is why I never back down or give up even if I am at risk, for example, when I am tracking prey down a tunnel without any human guidance.
Sometimes I use my powers for getting into things that I should not. Also, when I travel in the car, I should be in a dog seat or carrier or seatbelt harness so I can be prevented from getting into all kinds of trouble. If I am not strapped in, I might even go after your people food!
When training me, remember to always be persistent and consistent. Also take note of what sways me, be it a loved toy or favorite food. These things can be used as a reward when giving me instructions. I am particularly fond of letters and low-calorie foods like Zuke’s Mini Naturals and small dried bits of liver.
Convince Your Dachshund Not to Dig or Bark
Every dog barks and I am not the only one who is going to bark at the postman or the pizza delivery person or the leaves blowing on the lawn, but it is true that I bark more than other dogs. This is perhaps due to the fact that I was bred to trap underground prey and to bark a lot to alert my owner and fellow hunter.
Maintain A Healthy Weight Despite Your Dachshund’s Wishes
One of the main health issues that I have to face include IVDD or issues with my back or neck. For the most part, that is it, but it is still a good idea to invest in a good pet protection plan. Don’t forget about my teeth, either – teeth cleaning is very important, and more expensive issues can result if my health is not maintained. This also means keep me fit and trim even though everyone knows how much I love to eat!
Hunting With Your Dachshund
It is instinct for me to hunt badgers, rabbits and other rodents. Going after anything that squeaks is part of my nature. I will consider anything furry that runs fast as prey. Although I am social with other pets, in my mind, outside critters need to be pursued and eaten. If they live in the soil, even better for me because I love to dig! Make sure to keep an eye on me when in the yard because I can destroy the grass, flowers, or even try burrowing under the fence.
Traveling With Dachshund
I am a good traveler. In fact, I can also go on plane trips, even if flying seems scary. I will try to hide my fear. I can sit under the seat as I am not required to move to the cargo area. Whenever I see my owners packing a bag, I realize that we are going to travel. My owner always remembers to bring along some of my toys, and one or two of my bones or whatever else I may need. JetBlue has a great program called Jet Paws. The airline stewards are not worried about me getting out from under the seat and sitting in the lap of my guardians. In the same way, West Jet, which is a variant of JetBlue from Canada, has also been testing dog flights. Inevitably, though, whenever I take my nose out of the pack, there is always a woman to shout, “Zip him up!”

Overall, we are enthusiastic companions. Dachshunds aren’t for everyone, but those that love us really, really love us. There are even many dachshund clubs for members to meet up. If you are tempted to bring one of us home, do your research first as my breed may or may not be right for your family. Sadly, too many dachshunds end up in shelters every year.
