The Breeding Process and The Heat Cycle Of Dachshunds

Dachshunds are a complicated dog breed. We are available in various sizes, colors, coat types, and patterns. Predicting the color and pattern of the to-be-born dachshund pup is based on DNA analysis. There are a few of us who are born disabled due to the lack of expertise of the breeder, making it essential that you select a reliable breeder that knows what they’re doing. Especially when it comes to double dapper dachshunds and dilute breeds.

We can face several issues during pregnancy and may even need a Cesarean, which is why it is imperative to hire a skilled breeder for the task.

The Breeding Process and The Heat Cycle Of Dachshunds

Heat Cycle and Maturity

Female dachshunds

Females usually go into heat when they are between six to twelve months old, whereas they get mature by their second heat cycle. On average, the cycle lasts for three weeks. However, the period may vary with different dogs. Usually, dogs go into heat twice a year, with an interval of six to seven months between cycles. But again, the periods vary. The cycle occurs twice a year for most dogs and is called a season for this very reason.

  • During the initial days of the heat period, female dogs can experience a lot of bleeding and urination, along with swelling of the vulva. This is the chance for male dogs to mate with the female. We can smell a female in heat and are likely to hang out around them. However, female dogs do not allow mating at this point. The first part of her heat cycle is called the proestrus cycle. Estrogen levels rise during this period.
  • During the second part of the estrus phase, she will bleed less and may decide to accept a male for mating. Breeding is possible during this phase of the heat cycle, which lasts anywhere from four to thirteen days. The vulva swells more, but the discharge is lighter in color and decreases. At this stage, the estrogen levels drop, and progesterone levels increase.
  • After four days, the vulva goes back to its standard size, and the discharge becomes redder. It is called the diestrus phase.
  • The anestrus phase marks the completion of the heat cycle, and this is where the discharge ceases.

If your dachshund does not have a normal heat cycle, then you need to consult a vet to ensure that they do not have a severe medical condition. If they also get infertile or incomplete heat cycles, then it needs to be brought to the attention of the vet.

Male Dachshunds

Male dachshunds begin to produce sperm when they turn six months old. However, we become sexually mature at the age of 18 months. We can be chosen as the spud to mate with a female dachshund at that time.

Behavioral Changes

Male Dachshunds

We like to sleep cuddled up with someone during the heat cycle and can show a lot of attention to our master. We also behave anxiously during this period. If a male dachshund spots a female in heat, then we are likely going to try to mount her. Female dogs refuse this proposition if they are in the proestrus phase. Do not be extremely surprised or traumatized if a male dachshund tries to hump you or your furniture when in heat. You have been warned.

Female Dachshunds

Female dachshunds are either clingy or stiff when in heat. They may behave in contrast to their natural temperament. Some females start eating less, while others are hungry all the time. They tuck their tails between their legs to cover the vulva during the proestrus phase. Whereas, during the estrus period, they keep their tails on the side, inviting male dogs to mate. It is the standard way of flirting. A female dog will turn her rear end toward a male dog to provide the signal.
When bleeding, female dogs experience discomfort. You need to give your dog the space they need if they are irritated. Moreover, if they need attention, give them cuddles. You need to also keep an eye on her while keeping the house clean. By keeping track of your dog’s heat cycle and paying attention to their behavior, you can prevent your dog from unwanted pregnancy.

Getting Your Dachshund Spayed

If you do not want your female dachshund to breed pups, then you should get her spayed before her first cycle. While it is possible to get them spayed after the first cycle as well, you will need to vigilantly stop your dog from escaping your clutches and mating before that.

Breeding

Conception by a female dachshund is possible during the estrus period. Your female dog will not only attract a male dog for mating, but will also reciprocate the will to mate. If touched on the back or by a dog during this period, then she will stand still and move her tail to the side.
Before breeding is to begin, you must take pay attention to a few things:

Check Your Dog for Health Conditions

Obesity and congenital heart diseases can lead to problems during labor. A female dachshund must not be bred if she has health risks. Remember, you must get both the male and female dachshund checked for Brucellosis before breeding them. It is a sexually transmitted infection that can make them infertile.

Choosing the Right Size of Dogs

Consider the size of the to-be-born puppies when two dogs are bred. To keep the mother dog safe during labor and mating, breeding should be carried out between dogs that are more-or-less the same size.

Well-Groomed Male Dog

We must be clean and trimmed before we enter the mating procedure. An unclean male dog can infect a female one, leading to discomfort.

Mating Procedure

A female in heat holds up her tail to let a male dog smell and lick her vulva. Then he can mount the female dog and begin thrusting. Eventually, when the female is ready, he will push his penis inside. Within a matter of minutes, the glands around the penis will start to swell. The female will tighten her grip on the penis as a reaction, and they will end up in a tie.
It takes ten to thirty minutes for the swelling to subside and the tie to break off. During the tie, sperm is released into the canal, leading to pregnancy. Mating between dachshunds can look aggressive and forceful from a safe distance. However, under the supervision and between same-sized dogs, the fear of hurting each other is less.

Pregnancy

The gestation period for pregnancy in female dachshunds is 63 days. A female dachshund needs a balanced and nutritious diet during pregnancy to keep her and her puppies healthy. Visible signs of pregnancy are vomiting and loss of appetite, breast development, change in nipple color, sudden decrease in activity and mood swings, or behavioral changes.
