If you have ever owned a dachshund, you must be aware that I am very clever and athletic. I am also affectionate, stubborn and funny. Sometimes, I can be very naughty. However, I am easy to train. I love attention and I have a big personality. When we seek attention, we bark loudly or whine or we do something really naughty, like jumping on tables or chewing up shoes.
Dachshunds Might Be The Smallest of The Hounds and The Biggest in Spirit
We are among the smallest of the hounds, but we are the biggest in spirit. We also have a distinct, eye-catching shape, and all that know us dachshunds appreciate our intelligent character and hunting spirit. We are also known for our absolute devotion to our families. Because of these traits, we are one of the most popular dog breeds.
We are short-legged and long-backed, but we are very brave and sometimes even reckless. I am always ready to hunt badgers. In fact, we have been bred primarily to hunt badgers. It may surprise you that we were named one of the most aggressive dog breeds in a 2008 study in the Journal of Applied Animal Behavior Science.
Dachshund Are Fun-loving Dogs But They Can Also Hard To House Train
I am active and fun-loving, but I can also be willful and feisty, and difficult to housetrain. We are not a good choice of dog for just any family, particularly among families with young children. I tend to bark very loudly when I become suspicious and I am apprehensive about strangers. I become wary on account of a small reason, like a leaf blowing across the lawn. My tendency to bark at small provocations is one reason why I cannot be allowed to stay outside in the yard alone or to live outside.
Our breed descends from dogs that were bred to fearlessly follow prey into underground burrows and tunnels. Even today, I would be effective at this. Because of my breeding, I can be described as determined to the point of stubbornness. This is also why I am a bit more aggressive than most other dogs and why we are also enthusiastic diggers.
Our breed has a lot of variety to offer to its lovers. There are two sizes of dachshund. The standard size weighs between 16 to 32 pounds, and the miniature size weighs around 11 pounds or less. We also have three types of coats: smooth, long-haired, and wirehaired. In all three types of coat, there is a large variety of colors and markings. Dachshunds can be great family dogs if they are brought up with kids. However, dachshunds and children should be supervised to make sure that children don’t pick us up incorrectly or hold us wrong. Because my nature is adaptable and my need for exercise is moderate, I can be the appropriate breed for anyone from senior citizens to couples or young singles.
Dachshund Are Always Alert And Have A Deep Bark
My bark is big and deep. I am always alert. My bark and alertness make me an excellent watchdog. I can be trained easily. However, it is very important that you are the leader of the pack. I am very clever and I also love challenges so make sure I do not get bored during training sessions. To prevent this, introduce new tricks and schedule play breaks throughout my training. We also need a lot of exercise. As with most dogs, walk me for ten to twenty minutes, two to four times a day. What I really love is to run so, if possible, I should be taken to an off-leash, safe environment as often as possible.
It is also a good idea to have ramps or steps to the furniture to prevent me from hurting my back by jumping on or off from the bed or sofa. It is also important to hold me correctly so my back doesn’t get injured. One arm should be tucked under me, and the other should support the front end of my chest, which will keep my body in a horizontal position.
My coat comes in a wide range of colors and patterns. However, solid red is perhaps the most popular color. I can also be seen in other colors, like black, cream, chocolate or dapple, where the light-colored areas contrast with a darker base color.
Dachshunds Are Determined Dogs
I don’t really bark a lot, but I do tend to bark when I am ignored or when I want to alert my owners. It is important that you don’t reward me when I bark to alert you; however, don’t ignore me, either. If I am trying to alert you, remain calm, but make it clear that you are aware so that I will feel like I’ve done my job and can stop barking.
Dachshund Can Easily Deal With The Change
I am a very social breed, and in general, I get along with other dogs or pets pretty well. However, I get bored very easily; as such, I love having a furry friend with whom I can play throughout the day. But be careful with smaller pets like rabbits as I may not understand that a smaller pet is a housemate and not prey.
Conclusion
I should not be left alone outside the house. Even in the garden, I may get into trouble. There are many ways in which I can seriously harm myself when seeking out adventure as I tend to do. For instance, I might even try to eat rocks. Also, remember to lift and carry me properly as I am predisposed to back problems. Other medical issues I could experience relate to my elbows, knees, eyes, and fur.
