Hello people! I am Floppy, the dachshund. You must know me by now. Finally, I get to talk to you about something that I have always wanted to. Today, I am going to tell you that having two of us will make your world a whole lot better! My guardian is very sweet and adorable, but sometimes she is not home, and I feel alone. It doesn’t happen a lot, but when it does, it hurts like being denied a bone when I am hungry. I never understood why you humans beg your parents for a puppy and when you finally get one, you forget about us. Especially those of you who are single children. Well, we feel alone too when we do not have somebody to play with. When we get irritated and show our disappointment, you try to make it up to us with a bone, but what we really want is a companion.
Don’t tell me that you are unsure about owning two of us. Have you forgotten how only one of us gave you so much pleasure and made your world happy? Allow me to remind you what a pleasure it was to get us.
Main Reasons
- Do you remember the days when you didn’t have a dachshund? How you got back from work all tired and wished you had somebody waiting for you when you got back? Who does that for you? We do! How many times have you come home after having a big fight with your superior? And how many times have we made up for it by jumping straight into your arms as soon as you walk through that door. I will not rest until you remember each and everything we’ve done to make you happy.
- We sit and listen to you talk about why you were so upset today. You cry in front of us and share all your problems. I know we were not able to understand the reason, but we knew that you were not happy. Our cute little eyes and the puppy face we made cheered you up, right? You felt like you had somebody to share your problems with. Obviously, we cannot give advice, but our presence and warm, soft hugs were enough to cheer you up. We saved you so much money that you were going to spend on that counselor or psychiatrist. Wait, where do you spend your money then? I should have demanded more and better food from you.
- Do you remember the days when your mommy gave you food you did not like at all? Who finished it for you? Does that ring a bell? Okay, I loved that food, but I only ate it for you. I don’t know how you not like that food.
- Lying on the bed and eating a lot of that junk food was your favorite pastime until we came into your life. We were always coming around and convincing you to go on a walk or a play catch at the nearest park. Cause we care about you!
- Do you remember the days when everybody wanted to go for a pizza and you did not? If we were not there, who would you have used as your excuse to get out of social things? Who would have been the best company you could possibly have? And what do we get in return? Just a bone or two? That is not fair to us.
This message is to all of you humans who own take your dachshund for granted. Remember how much they have done for you and how they have been like a sibling to you. Now let me help you with what you can do for them in return. I know them. They want a companion to play with. No, I am not saying you’re not enough, but a companion of our own would be much better. If this is not enough of a reason for you, let me state some more.
Even More Reasons:
- We hate to be alone: Yes, as mentioned above, you cannot be home all day. Thankfully, you have a job. Do you think about us when we are home alone? If you do, you are a good human. But if you don’t, then how can you always tell me to be good to people? When you leave us, we have nothing better to do than just dig in the yard. Do you like that? No, then you come and make us take a bath. And we do not like to bathe, okay? No dog does. But if you leave us with one of our own, we will play the whole day and have fun. Then, you would never have to take us to vet for our reluctant behavior caused by loneliness. Just think about me being at home all day alone. Terrifying? Now get me a companion.
- No need to spend hours on our exercise now: You humans who get tired of taking us for walks can rest if you get two of us. Why? Obviously, I know you need reasons for everything. Well, when two dachshunds play together, we play a lot more than what we do alone or with you. The physical activities we would do together will be beyond the 30-minute daily walk you give us. And as you know, we do need to indulge in physical stuff to stay healthy and happy, so this good way out for you.
- Two of us will get trained happily: Do you remember how we made it so difficult for you to train us? We are lazy too, okay. And we do not like to be disciplined. But we eventually had to start doing things we do not like to. Why? Because we love you humans. We would do anything for you. I know the reason you don’t want to get a new dog is probably because you don’t want to go through all that training again. But don’t worry, we older ones will take care of it. Yes, in our breed, younger ones follow the older ones in everything. I promise he won’t poop anywhere in the house. He’ll only use the potty place that I do.
- Save two of us: Yes, it is sad that millions of my brothers and sisters are lying in animal shelters. It is not even their choice to be in those shelters. We always wanted to roam the streets and have fun together. We love you, but just thinking of a day being around only dogs and no human and now think about your whole life like that. That is what happens to us. In shelters, even being together does not make us happy because we are caged, and in our homes, we do not live with our own. But it is such a good opportunity for you to help two of us. Get them out of the cages and bring them to us. And then we will all have everything we want.
- You will witness the purest bond: I have seen you people calling each other ‘friends’ and getting into fights every other minute. We dogs do not do that. We are peaceful beings. We love each other’s company. We might take a little time to get along, but once we do, you will witness the purest form of love and bonding. We will cuddle together, actually, all of us can do it together and I know you love it when we cuddle you so just imagine cuddling two of us. Two of us will double the happiness and joy in your life.
- If you think we need to get over something, get us somebody: Even we feel sad when somebody leaves us. We mourn deaths more than anybody. If you think your dog is not able to get over something that is depressing him, getting him another dog would be the best choice. I have seen many of my friends go through the pain of loss, and we dogs have always been with them and helped him cheer up, but we cannot be with each other all day and eventually have to go back home with our owners. So if any dog loses somebody, get him somebody special.
- If you are worried about money, don’t be: I understand that money is an important thing for you humans and I also know that we come with a handful of expenses. But if you think the second dog will be equally expensive, then you might want to think again. Dogs demand food, and we will share it. Dogs demand toys, we will obviously share them. A place to sleep will not be an issue. We are adjustable living beings and can adjust to our friends. Just take care of the vaccines because we cannot share those and we don’t want to fall sick. I know that you are good, and I know you are getting that having a second dachshund is not a bad deal.
I think that these reasons might be enough for you to think about getting a second dachshund. And if you have made up your mind, I love you already. But also, choosing a dog to bring home could be a little confusing so let me help you with that too.
Factors For Choosing The Second Dachshund
- Personality: Have you noticed your dachshund being happy around a particular type of dog? Does he seem happier around playful ones or calm ones? Some of us just like to play with dogs and some of us seem happier cuddling and playing indoors. Our personality matters a lot to choosing the second one for our home. If we are the playful ones, you might need the second one to calm us down. And if some of my friends are insecure or quiet, get them a confident, playful one. Basically, get a dog that seems to make it easier for your dog. After all, they have to get along well to make you happy.
- Age: As I have mentioned earlier, we can train the little ones for you. But there is a slight problem with getting one that is much younger one than us. As we get older, we will not be as active, but he will still be playful and active and that might not turn out well for us. So try getting a dog closer to our age.
- Sex: All wishing aside, dogs of the same sex might turn into enemies after some time. Yes, we do not really get along well if the other one is competitive or arrogant. But, getting a second dog of the opposite sex can be a good choice because male dogs seem to be happier and calmer around female dogs (obviously).
- Size: If you get a dog that is too little for us, we might end up hurting him and not even intentionally. We are an active breed and we cannot calm down and sit without delving into physical activity and after the second one comes home, we will be like this together. If you don’t want to have to watch us all the time for fear of the smaller one getting hurt, think about getting a dog of a similar size. It will be a good thing for all of us.
- Make us meet: Before finalizing the companion for us, it would be better if we could meet. And don’t do it with bounded leashes on because they create a sense of competition and aggression. Instead, do it on opposite sides of the fence. If you see us getting along or even notice a little hope, it can be a good sign. And if either of us seem to dislike the other, keep looking for the right one. I know it is a little long and tiring process, but it is for all of us.
- Where to get him from? In most cases, it might be the best option to get the second dog from the same breeder you got us from (if you are happy with us, and how could you not be). But if that is not possible, try getting them from a place similar to where you got me from.

What a long conversation. But I am happy that my friends around the world will get somebody to play with now. Mark my words: They are going to be the happiest dogs. You will love playing with them. You will love witnessing their bond.
