Are Dachshunds Good Dogs?

Humans are weird creatures. It’s true! Sometimes, it’s really hard to understand them. And thanks to the communication barrier between us, understanding each other is not as easy as chewing bones. But my time in the company of humans has taught me that all humans are not the same. In my personal experience, I have met some really kind, smart and sweet humans while some others I have noticed were really stupid and mean. Don’t get offended, you know it’s true. But I like the cute female humans because they like to play with us and they get all gooey-eyed when they see us. Basically, they’re softies.

Are Dachshunds Good Dogs?

My owner is like that. She is really kind and sweet. In my early months, I did not really like her and showed my displeasure by pooping anywhere I felt like, even ruining her furniture, in spite of her instructions. But she showed patience and consistency and in time, I grew to love her. Since then, I have watched many humans approach her with questions about dachshunds, like if we are good dogs, if we are loyal, about our diet, stuff like that. If you’re thinking of adopting a dachshund, below is some information that my owner has often provided others.

Are Dachshunds Good Family Dog?

Are Dachshunds Good Dogs?

When people come over with questions for my owner, they usually bring me a bone or some other treat. They want to know if dachshunds make good family dogs. The answer is yes. My breed is courageous and a little aggressive; after all, we are hunting dogs historically, which should explain our notorious behavior toward strangers or why we are inclined to take on dogs larger than ourselves. Because of these traits, we are sometimes seen in a negative light, and misread as a wild or unfriendly breed, but that is not the case. We are actually friendly, independent dogs, and I’ve heard my owner tell others that we are intelligent, too. She also said that we are resourceful and do not need frequent instructing.

Are Dachshunds Good with Babies?

Dachshunds like living in packs, which makes us a family-loving breed. We are playful dogs with a sense for humor. And because, in my experience, kids are really fun and they have a lot of time to play, I love them. That said, as I already mentioned, we do not love strangers, so if your child’s friend is coming over for a birthday party, make sure to introduce us so I don’t scare them with my loud bark.

Are Dachshunds Loyal To One Person?

Dachshunds are a very loyal breed and like any other dog, we bask in the attention of our owners. If we are your only pet and we spend a lot of time with you, watching you fill up our bowls every morning, then of course, you are likely going to be out favorite person. We will show our pleasure at seeing you by wagging our tails or plumping up our ears.
But sometimes, we grow too attached to one person, which can cause separation anxiety and stress when we’ve been separated for long hours. This is not good for us. It is a good idea to make sure that we don’t become over-attached by keeping us in the company of different people. When I was younger, my owner discouraged attention-seeking behavior. She would hug me and talk to me, but when she was done, she would signal that the interaction was over. If I whined unnecessarily, she would not return to me. But if I behaved well and did not follow her all over the house, she would use a long evening walk as positive reinforcement. This type of training prevented me from becoming overly attached to her.

Are Dachshunds A Loyal Breed?

Dogs, in general, are very loyal companions and dachshunds are no exception. We love our owners and we care deeply about them and the ones they love. Once we are trained properly and we accept you as our pack leader, we will be extremely faithful companions. We are known to protect our owners from strangers and we will follow you lovingly and loyally wherever you go.

Are Dachshunds Dogs Aggressive?

We are a little aggressive, but remember: traditionally, we were bred as hunting dogs so a little aggression and barking at strangers should come as no surprise. Our daring nature can also be interpreted as aggressive, but rest assured, we don’t really bite unless we are really riled up.
Our training is essential to how we turn out. We do have a mind of our own; that and our intelligence can make us a little challenging to train. My owner had some trouble training me, but I will let you in on a little secret that will make it easier to train your dachshund. Dogs want to live in a pack with a leader. It is instinctual to us. If you are firm about demonstrating your role as our leader, then it will be easier to get us to listen to you. If you don’t establish yourself as our leader, then there is a chance our aggression will come out more often.

Do Dachshunds Prove To Be Good Pets?

Dachshunds are an intelligent breed, and if we find your actions unfair, we may growl at you. We love ourselves some attention and if you can find a little time for us in your schedule, we will end up showering you with love in return. We are good watchdogs as we usually stay alert. We are loyal companions and we will never leave your side no matter what. And we love eating lots and lots of food. So if you think you can take care of our basic needs, play with us as often as possible, and train us well, we promise to behave and follow your instructions. I believe you will find us to be great pets.

Conclusion

We are smart, friendly dogs, and if you train us well and we get to know you and your loved ones, you will see that we make adorable, well-behaved companions. I bet you can fall in love with a dachshund, just like my owner and her family fell in love with me.
