Records show that humans and dogs have been companions in many different civilizations through time and around the world. Scholars say that dogs were domesticated around 15,000 years ago. Several new pieces of evidence suggest that they were first domesticated in East Asia, possibly in China. Over time, hundreds of breeds with a great degree of variation have emerged.
Like humans, dogs are social animals, and this similarity in behavior accounts for their playfulness, trainability, and ability to fit into human surroundings and social situations. Moreover, the loyalty and devotion that dogs show for their owners, which is instinctual to them, is one reason why most dog owners view their pet as a full-fledged family member.
Canis familiaris
The scientific name of the domesticated dog is “Canis familiaris,” from the dog family “Canidae.” Dogs differ in appearance, function, size, and temperament. It is understandable that you would want to try and stop a fight by doing whatever it takes, but physically intervening in a dog fight puts you at risk of getting bitten. Complications from bite wounds can lead to severe pain and infection and sometimes permanent tissue damage. Some may even require plastic surgery.
Instead of using any part of your body to stop a dog fight, use a stick or a chair, or spray water on the dogs with a hose to separate them. Try making a loud noise such as slamming a door or sounding a horn. However, don’t yell at the dogs; it can add to their excitement and escalate the fight.

How to Train Your Dog
You may have already heard of many training approaches as the challenges of training a puppy are quite common. With all the information out there, how do you know what works? What are the best methods for training your dog? Naturally, you can enroll your dog in a training program where they will get a proper foundation and learn to understand basic commands. However, your dog will be living with you, so you should put some effort into training them yourself as well.
Toilet Training
The most basic training, and the most important one, is toilet training. This process may take some time and might get overwhelming, but after some time, your dog will understand what you’re trying to teach them if you use the tried-and-true methods.
For starters, try confining your dog to a limited area in the beginning, so your whole house doesn’t turn into a potty-training zone. Your dog will gradually learn that the small area they live in is not for peeing or pooping, and with time, you can expand the area, and gradually, your dog can have free rein in the house without doing their “business” everywhere. ]]>Dogs are curious about their surroundings; they lick everything and put things in their mouth. This is one way that they learn. However, this results in your dog having bad breath and plaque build-up that is difficult to remove. A lot of dog owners only care about bathing their dogs and using good shampoos to prevent fleas and ticks, but they forget about their dog’s dental hygiene.
In the past, a dog’s dental health was not given enough significance, but more recently, emphasis has been placed on a dog’s dental hygiene. Dental hygiene is of equal value for dogs as it is for humans; in the event of a failure to maintain better hygiene, a dog’s teeth can build up plaque, causing tooth pain, infection, decay, and bad breath. All of these threats to dental health can also affect the overall health of your dog.
In addition, there are other oral health issues that can also be caused by your dog eating dirt. Dachshunds are more prone to dental health problems than other breeds. To prevent problems, establish and maintain a regular tooth-brushing routine. We all know how this goes – it is challenging to brush a dog’s teeth, but with these techniques, your dachshund might allow you to brush his teeth instead of fighting you. This brushing teeth ritual might even help strengthen your bond with your dachshund.
STEP 1
A dog needs to get acclimatized to the taste of toothpaste so that when you approach him for brushing, he won’t be surprised and want to get that taste out of his mouth. Take a small quantity of the paste and let your dog lick it off of his teeth. This way, he will get used to the taste and texture of the toothpaste and will not have much problem later on. An essential word of advice here is to use toothpaste made for dogs only; toothpaste made for humans has a minty taste to it that your dog will never like.
A lot of the toothpastes for dogs available on the market are of different flavors such as poultry, peanut butter, and beef, which make them more appealing for your dachshund. These flavors will make them think that toothpaste is a treat.
STEP 2
Gently place some toothpaste on your dachshund’s teeth and rub it with your fingers. Also, massage his gums. This will further allow your dog to get ready for the process. Your dachshund will slowly get used to having something in his mouth and will not protest later when you follow up the procedure with the brush.
Once your dog is comfortable, gradually work your way from the front teeth to the back teeth, slowly covering his entire mouth. Repeat this process every day, and with time, your dog will understand that this new process is routine. And do not forget to reward your dachshund with a treat or play with him and remind him that he is a good boy.
STEP 3
Introduce the brush into the routine. To make that happen, first of all, sit down or kneel beside your dachshund. Be very calm and loving in your approach. Avoid holding him down as this might intimidate him. Now, take a small amount of toothpaste and gently press it against your dog’s teeth.
Place your hand over the top of his muzzle and lift his lips on one side. Move the dog brush slowly in a circular direction. Try to keep it at 45 degrees so that all the plaque can be easily removed and the gum line can be cleaned. Make gentle strokes from the brush and keep in mind that your dog should feel comfortable with this process. If you see signs of struggle, pause for a while and caress his back and head. You might notice some amount of gum bleeding in the initial days of brushing, and this is very normal since the gums are trying to adapt to the new cleaning process.
WARNINGS
- A little amount of gum bleeding is average, but if the bleeding persists, then contact the veterinarian to rule out a possible gum infection. It is very common for dogs to have dental health issues if their dental health has not adequately been taken care from an early age.
- Use a brush that has soft hair and is meant for dogs. Using a toothbrush meant for humans might not lead to similar results. Human teeth are very different from dog teeth; using a human toothbrush increases the chances of gum bleeding for your dog as the bristles are not soft.
- Only use dog-specific toothpaste to brush your dachshund’s teeth. Toothpaste meant for humans contains fluoride, which is not healthy for your dog.
TIPS
- Talk to your dachshund in a very loving and cheerful tone; try to praise him during brushing and after brushing. Be very supportive during the entire process. Watch out for any signs of struggle and pause whenever necessary. Shower your dog with love the whole time.
- Avoid being aggressive or angry with your dog when he’s getting his teeth brushed. He will not understand why you are angry with him.
- Take your dog out for a walk, or play with him, or offer a treat after brushing his teeth so that he associates the teeth-brushing ritual as a positive experience.
- Slowly introduce the teeth-brushing ritual. Don’t make it a regular ritual right away. At first, brush your dog’s teeth once a week, then after two weeks, make it two times a week for two weeks, and so on. Repeat the entire process until your dog gets used to it and is ready for it to become a ritual. If your dachshund is struggling, try to give him time.
- Only brush your dog’s teeth when he is calm and relaxed. If he is already panicked about something, he will have a tough time adapting to the ritual and may even fear getting his teeth brushed. You don’t want your dog to see getting his teeth brushed as a negative experience.
- In addition to brushing, there are other items suitable for your dog’s dental hygiene. For example, the chewing action from dental treats like dental chews scrapes off plaque, and your dog will enjoy it because the treats come in the form of a meat-flavored stick. Dental sticks are delicious and your dog will love them. Try giving your dog dental chews or sticks on the days when he doesn’t get his teeth brushed. This will make his breath fresher and also prevent future plaque build-up.

]]>Hello there! I am Floppy, the loyal dachshund. I have written on a number of topics regarding the general health of our breed, our care and well-being. Today, we will be talking about why you should walk your dog regularly, and its importance in your dog’s life.
Why Is It So Important?
Let’s see why it is so important to walk your dog regularly.
Staying Active!
All dogs need their daily walk. It is even more vital for dachshunds. We are an intelligent breed, used mostly for our great sense of smell. Dachshunds sometimes work with the cops or the FBI.
Yes, we are that smart! In order to prevent lethargy and keep our bodies active, we need to exercise regularly. A dachshund is also a playful breed so you will have lots of fun with your dog while going for a walk.
Hunting
Dachshunds are designed to hunt; we enjoy going after small insects, badgers and the like. It is important for a dachshund to get out of the house every once in a while – he needs to go on his hunting sprees. They like to go after their prey and kill it. The toys at home will not suffice all the time.
Exercise
A dachshund’s build is quite different from that of other dog breeds. We have a large face and a long back, but very short legs. Our entire weight is supported by our small legs, which can lead to extra strain on them. This can also lead to abnormal weight gain. Since we are a playful breed that likes to go on adventures, weight gain is not at all suitable for a dachshund.
Avoid Lethargy
Dachshunds like to play. But if we are not given access to open space and fresh air, we can sometimes become downright lazy and fat. You don’t want your dog sleeping all the time, or just lying around idle. You want him capable of protecting the house and able to sniff out any pests. In order to perform our “jobs,” we really need our daily walk.
Socializing
Another reason why walks are so important for dogs is socialization. A dog likes to know more about the environment they live in, the neighborhood, the neighbors, and most importantly, other dogs in the area. We like getting to know each other, and meeting up, not unlike our masters. If our master has friends who also have a dog, that is the best thing ever! Then we can go for walks together, have play dates, hunt together, and many more things. We also don’t like being cooped up all day inside the house, with limited access to the world and few people to play with.
To Drain The Adrenaline
Dachshunds are meant primarily for scent-tracking and hunting. As such, we get these sudden bursts of energy at times, which we need to release every now and then. A walk addresses that need. Without a walk, our energy stores up inside our body and brain, making us restless and destructive. We could end up chewing on clothes, rugs, shoes, etc. even if we don’t want to!
Necessary Functions
A dog does not always want to relieve himself in the home or in the vicinity of the home. Sometimes, he needs a change in location. A walk provides this. A walk will also make going to the bathroom easier, and the house will be left fresher for it, too.
Consequences
Let’s take a look at the negative effects of not walking your dog regularly.
Breed-specific Health Problems
Dachshunds are especially prone to back problems. It could be genetic or situational, caused by moving the wrong way for our build, for example. The causes behind our back problems are many, and it is highly likely that a dachshund will experience some. One sure way of avoiding back problems is simple – take them out for a walk regularly, and you’re less likely to have anything to worry about.
Nuisance
Dachshunds are especially good at deep barks. If they don’t get their walk and adequate exercise, they tend to bark loudly, creating a ruckus in the neighborhood. This behavior is the result of restlessness caused by staying at home all day long. A dog needs fresh air every day, too.
Becoming Withdrawn
If you keep your dog inside the house all day long, away from the rest of the world, it is likely that he will become withdrawn. If he lacks experience interacting with the outside world, he will be confused about how to react when he happens to meet others. There will be hesitation and barking.
Becoming Hyperactive
If you don’t take your dog out often, there is a chance that he will go nuts when he does go outside. He would want to make the most of his time outside, resulting in over-enthusiasm. Humans might misinterpret this behavior as rude or arrogant, but most of the time, it is just over-friendliness that causes us to behave this way. Furthermore, this will make our owners hesitant about removing a dog’s leash and letting him roam around freely.
Stiffness
Dachshunds are already built with lower stamina, due to their short legs and long body. However, without regular walks, this situation will worsen, along with stiffness in the muscles. Stiff muscles will make it hard to run fast, jump around, and play chase.
Training Becomes Harder
Every dog requires training. Dachshunds are meant for hunting and socializing. However, in order to be compatible with humans, we need to be trained properly. Training is a crucial part of a dog’s life. If not done right, he might remain unruly. Training is done best outside the house, in the open air, and not within four walls. Through walks, this process becomes natural.
